Baby Songs

Ok Mamas and Papas,

What were your favorite songs to sing to your wee little ones?

This gal can’t carry a tune in a bucket so we’re hoping for some easy-to-sing, easy-to-remember tunes!

-Sonja

I remember my dad putting this one on the record player pretty frequently. I loved it. Perhaps because I was always out mucking around in the yard? I was an expert mud-pie maker, thankyouverymuch!

A bold hippopotamus was standing one day
On the banks of the cool Shalimar
He gazed at the bottom as he peacefully lay
By the light of the evening star
Away on the hilltop sat combing her hair
His fair hippopotami maid
The hippopotamus was no ignoramus
And sang her this sweet serenade

Chorus:
Mud, mud, glorious mud
Nothing quite like it for cooling the blood
So follow me follow, down to the hollow
And there let me wallow in glorious mud

  1. Oh I have a list alright...let's start with "Morningtown" which Chris may remember as "Train Whistle Blowing". Have him sing it for you! There's also "Wee Baby Moon, "Walbash Cannon Ball" (my dad's contribution),"You can close your eyes" by James Taylor, "In my life" by the Beatles. "Amazing Grace" is also good. I almost forgot one of our favorites, "Puff the Magic Dragon" !

  2. For bedtime to Gabriel I sing "Stay Awake" from Mary Poppins. For Lorelai it is "A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes" and "So This is Love" both from Disney's Cinderella.

Popular music around our house: Raffi (Classic kids music...tons on iTunes - We have Singable songs for the Very Young), VeggieTales Sunday School Songs, Harry Connick Jr.'s "Songs I Heard", Imagination Movers (they have a show on Disney that Gabriel adores), we're also in Kindermusik and he enjoys the songs from that, any Disney music, Mary Poppins and Sound of Music soundtracks, Beatles music, How much is that Doggy in the Window (CLASSIC!!!), The Philadelphia Chickens and Blue Moo (Sandra Boynton CDs based no her board books for little kids). The kid's playlist is so long that I need to go through it and break it up into categories so I can find what I'm looking for easier. lol We LOVE music here! :)

I love "Tender Shepard" and I have the usual preschool songs. I also made up songs on the spot, like the timeless, "I heard you pooping in your sleep."
