Eugene celebrates slugs with art and coronation

Personally, I always celebrated slugs with an impromptu party with the bottom of my shoe but clearly I don't have the proper appreciation for these lovely gastropods:

(from the Seattle Times)

EUGENE, Ore. — It wasn't easy, but 25 years after the birth of the Society for the Legitimization of the Ubiquitous Gastropod (SLUG) and the crowning of Queen Bruce, the first Slug Queen, Eugene's slimy bit of royalty is getting some respect.

Constance Van Flandern, a Eugene freelance-graphic designer, loves the whole thing.

"I can't tell you how excited I am about this," she said over a coffee at one of several businesses she persuaded to take part in the inaugural one-week "Slug Trail" held earlier this month, a runup to the coronation of this year's Slug Queen. More than 20 businesses offered everything from slug-themed cupcakes to banana-slug cocktails. The Slug Queen Art Exhibition was added this year.

The Official Slug Queen Eugene website can be found here. Don't miss the crowning of the Slug Queen next Friday. (picture taken from the website)
